Let’s face it: no one likes cleaning their shower, especially when there’s mould and soap scum build up. It’s a thankless job and the chemical sprays we use can often leave us feel light-headed and worse for wear.

So how can you clean your shower effectively with a chemical-free spray? We’ve found one that works every time and is safe for the whole family to use.

Homemade shower cleaner

  • 1 cup bi-carb soda
  • 1/3 cup borax
  • ½ cup liquid soap
  • 2 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 4 drops essential oil

  • Place all ingredients into a spray or squeezable plastic bottle and give it a shake
  • Apply to shower surface evenly.
  • Allow to sit for 20 minutes then use a toothbrush to get into any grooves and tiles.
  • Wipe off and rinse.

Bonus mould remover!

Tea tree oil is a natural fungicide that has antibacterial and antiseptic properties making it great for removing and preventing mould.

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil with 1 cup of water in a spray bottle.
  • Spray onto the affected areas and leave overnight if you like.
  • Wipe clean with a damp towel.

  1. Mine isn’t a tip on how to clean. Every day after I shower I thoroughly wipe the shower out. I was told to do this a long time ago. If you wipe it out every day after your shower you won’t get mould. Mould only grows in damp conditions. Believe you me, it does make a difference.

  2. I clean my shower regularly with either Shower Power or Domestos and have no problem with mould but the glass still has terrible marks like soap scum even though they’re literally squeaky clean when you run your hand over them. I put a query on another Sat60 post recently if anyone had a solution and I was told to use a squeegee to wipe away any droplets. It’s been good on one of the panels, which I believe is true glass but the other glass(?) panel still has the marks. Wish I could make it fully see-through again which is why I’m willing to try this.

    • I use cuddly fabric softener. Wipe on with wet cloth , then rinse and dry. If it is really bad I use car cutting compound polish and a bit of elbow grease. This brings the glass back to new. I do this every 6 months. Hope this helps

    • If the shower glass is as bad as you say it is generally caused by hard water which stains. There is a product called Hound Dog it will take a lot of work, is works in a way similar to brasso a lot of rubbing. If you have hard water in your area it will come back your council should be able to tell you if your area has it. Glass is porous and hard water eats into the glass, you are cleaning correctly it is just the hard water sending the glass cloudy this won’t harm your health.
If it worries you the only real way to solve the problem is replace the glass but if you have hard water in time it may happen again. It is true that it will only attack some glass but not all. With my own shower we have 4 sheets of glass 2 have the problem and 2 don’t all the same age. The hound dog does work but in my opinion not worth the time it takes to get results seeing as the problem only looks bad and won’t harm my health.

  3. I originally used Gumption successfully to get the soap scum off the glass in our shower when we moved into our home. Since then we wipe the glass down after we shower and haven’t looked back.

  4. I wipe mine every day when I finish showering.

    • So do you wipe it down with the towel you use to dry yourself with or do you use a clean towel every time to wipe it down.

  5. Enjo is great too. No chemicals, just water and the Enjo glove. But mould is another story. Once mould is present it’s there forever. Contrary to popular belief (and advertising) nothing actually kills mould, only bleaches it but you’ll notice it always comes back in the same spot. That’s because it never went away in the first place. Best to wipe it dry after showering to prevent mould taking hold

  6. Use Neways Refresh shower gel. And their shampoos and conditioners! You will never have to scrub your shower again. A simple wipe over does the job. No harmful ingredients, no soap scum to cloud the glass and dull your tiles. Used it since 1993.
