Australia is a nation that sees millions of tourists every year, and we’d like to think we live up to our reputation and can be respected for it. But when it comes to the crunch, we just scrape in the top 5 most respected countries.

So who made it to number one? Well, if you’ve been there, maybe you might understand. Canada is the most respected country in the world.

According to the poll of 48,000 people worldwide, Canada has taken top honours for the fourth time in five years. The Northern American country has an effective government, a high level of development and the best quality of life over any country in the world, says those who voted.

The data was collected by the Reputation Institute’s 2015 Country Reptrak Survey, which examines how 55 countries are perceived across the globe according to 16 attributes.Life in the land of the golden temples: A mesmerising tour…

These include categories such as technology, use of public resources, social and economic policies, institutional environment and international perception.

Interestingly, perhaps the more regal of the Western countries, the UK, was not featured in the top 10 most respected nations, despite huge levels of tourists and a world city – London. The US was not even in the top 20.

Why should we care how respected we are? Because our reputation is crucial to our survival, not just in the tourism industry but in foreign investment, stocks and exports.
