Outrage as two female musicians spray own urine on national monuments

Two female musicians have sparked outrage after filling up water guns with their own urine, before spraying it over historical Australian monuments in a bizarre protest.

Musical duo Takiaya Reed and Sylvie Nehill, who call themselves Divide and Dissolve, filmed themselves on the toilet before scooping out their urine and proudly holding the filled-up clear jars to the camera. Then, they slowly poured each into two water guns before heading to a series of monuments.  

The video, uploaded to website Noisey and YouTube, shows them spraying a statue of John Batman, an Australian entrepreneur who founded the settlement of Melbourne. From there, they head to Cook’s Cottage and a statue of Captain James Cook in Victoria to do the same – laughing and posing throughout.

Not done there, later footage shows them go on to spit on some of the monuments, before spraying them again in broad daylight.

In a statement, posted with the video, the pair said: “We would like to acknowledge these are a few of the many monuments to genocide, white supremacy, colonial violence, cultural genocide, ecocide, slavery, rape, and murder.

“We are so excited to live in a world where these monuments do not exist. Bring them down. Decolonise Now.”

They added on their YouTube clip, titled “Resistance”: “Our existence represents their failure in their attempt to wipe us from our homelands. Every breath and step we take absolutely dismantles their frivolous efforts to extinguish Indigenous Sovereignty.”

It got a mixed response as many users slammed the offensive behaviour. One commented: “Absolute feral mutts hope they get caught,” while another added: “I understand the message but extremely bloody disgusting and feral.”

However another simply wrote: “Love it”.

They promoted the shocking video on their Facebook page, prompting many to brand them “disgusting” for the vile act.

In the accompanying article on Noisey, they reveal they’ve recently returned from a trip to the US, and are now preparing to tour their sophomore record ‘Abomination’. The author then confirms their recent ‘Resistance’ video was a way of marking their tour announcement.
