Monica Lewinsky’s fury after being uninvited from Bill Clinton event

More than two decades may have passed since her infamous affair with Bill Clinton, but Monica Lewinsky is still haunted by her relationship with the former US president.

Now 44, the former White House intern still gets invited to an array of glitzy and glamorous events. One magazine ran into a bit of difficulty when it accidentally invited Lewinsky to the same event as her former lover.

Realising its blunder, Lifestyle magazine Town and Country promptly uninvited Lewinsky from the event. The only problem was she’d already confirmed her attendance and was noticeably upset by the snub. Taking to her Twitter account, Lewinsky explained how the events unfolded.

“Dear world: please don’t invite me to an event (esp one about social change) and –then after i’ve accepted– uninvite me because bill clinton then decided to attend/was invited. it’s 2018 [sic],” she wrote “P.s. …and definitely, please don’t try to ameliorate the situation by insulting me with an offer of an article in your mag.”

While Lewinsky didn’t name the magazine, Town and Country later tweeted a short statement about the mistake.

“We apologize to Ms. Lewinsky and regret the way the situation was handled,” the message read.

Meanwhile, Clinton’s press secretary also said he wasn’t aware Lewinsky had been invited to the event or that she had later been uninvited.

“President Clinton was invited to address the Town & Country Philanthropy Summit,” he said on Twitter. “He gladly accepted. Neither he nor his staff knew anything about the invitation or it being rescinded.”

Despite her past, Lewinsky has been a big part of the #MeToo movement, particularly because of the way she was treated in the ‘90s by the media for her part in the affair. The Philanthropy Summit, all about promoting the welfare in others, has been slammed for their decision to un-invite Lewinsky.

Hollywood producer Judd Apatow said the decision made by Town and Country went against everything people were fighting for.

“This is what everyone is fighting against. @townandcountry should be ashamed of themselves,” he tweeted. “Do they let their heads of the magazine prey on their interns? Would they disinvite them after abusing their power to get what they wanted from them?”

Clinton still attended the event and took to the stage in New York City to welcome gun control activist and Florida school shooting survivor Emma Gonzalez to the summit. The event was later streamed live on social media.

What do you think? Should Monica Lewinsky have been uninvited from the event simply because Bill Clinton was in attendance? Did they make the right call?
