ABC cancels Yassmin Abdel-Magied’s TV show

The television presenter has been in the spotlight since April, 2017.

The ABC has cancelled Yassmin Abdel-Magied’s show Australia Wide, following her controversial Anzac Day comments.

Abdel-Magied has hosted the show since 2016, travelling the country to speak to ‘everyday Australians’ and showcase their stories.

The 26-year-old has faced serious backlash since she posted on Facebook on Anzac Day: “Lest We Forget (Manus, Nauru, Syria, Palestine …)”.

Her words were interpreted by many has a dig at Australia’s veterans and disrespectful to the sacrifices our diggers made in Gallipoli.

The ABC has denied the backlash had anything to do with the cancellation, telling Nine News: “This decision has been under consideration for some time and was not to do with any controversy over presenter Yassmin Abdel-Magied.

“Yassmin was aware the program was under review, and we are discussing with her future opportunities at the ABC.”

On Tuesday, she caused further outrage by arguing she had a right to speak her mind, regardless of the offence it may cause.

“Who is anyone to tell me what it means to be Australian?” she asked a group of Year 9 students from Dapto, NSW, adding she had been treated “unfairly”.

The ABC did not respond to Starts at 60’s request for comment at the time of publishing.

What are your thoughts on this? Was it right to cancel the show? Do you hope to see Yassmin back on the ABC?
