The Calgary Stampede is a popular 105-year old event in Canada, known for preserving and celebrating western heritage, cultures and community spirit. The not-for-profit community organisation run by volunteers, is a 10-day event with multiple events, shows, competitions and attractions, bringing in festival-goers from all over the world.

This year will be extra special as renowned actor, producer, director and musician Kevin Costner, has been named the Parade marshal for the popular Canadian festival.

The Yellowstone actor was chosen for being a legendary symbol of the heritage and spirit of western culture, with the president & chairman of the Calgary Stampede Board, Steve McDonough saying Costner represents the very “essence” of the rodeo.

“What he represents, through his work and organic love of the modern west, is paralleled in the essence and values of the Calgary Stampede,” McDonough said.

Costner said attending the Calgary Stampede has given him some great memories over the years and he looks forward to being a part of this year’s festivities.

“I have a lot of fond memories of being in Calgary. It has made a big difference to me in my life to make Open Range and Let Him Go there. It’s one of the most beautiful spots,” the actor said.

“On July 8, I’ll be there, and I’m really honoured to be a part of what you have done for so long and carry on a tradition. See you at the Parade.”
