Europe is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world with its stunning natural scenery, long-standing infrastructure and array of historical monuments.

While the high tourist traffic does wonders for the European economy, some travellers are wary over fear of falling victim to the petty crime that is so prominent in many popular cities.

Light-handed pickpocketing and cleverly planned scams are some of the quick tricks that local criminals will use to steal important belongings from as many tourists as possible. While it is hard to predict or stop the crime, there are ways to help you properly protect your property and enjoy a stress-free holiday.

The most common areas targeted by petty thieves are popular tourist spots such as museums, cathedrals and iconic landmarks. It’s important that you remain on high alert when visiting these areas and avoid opening your bag or obviously checking on your belongings. Keep one hand constantly on the opening of bag or purse so you are aware of its whereabouts at all times.

Bags with long straps are some of the easiest items for thieves to snatch. Wearing your bag across your chest rather than hanging off one arm will stop fast-moving thieves from grabbing your belongings and quickly escaping. However, they are also known to carry scissors and cut handles or straps for an easier robbery. It’s important to invest in a heavy-duty, travel-safe bag that will safely withstand knives or scissors.

The best option would be to purchase a hidden bum-bag that can be tucked under clothing to conceal and protect any important items. Whatever you do, never, ever put anything of importance in your back pocket as it is a pickpocket’s easiest target.

The trick of the trade is generally distraction. Thieves know that if a tourist’s attention is on something interesting, they are much more vulnerable. Most times, they will work in groups to create believable distractions for tourists. These can be as simple as someone asking for directions, to as choreographed as a street performance so tourists are gathered together and completely focussed on the entertainment.

Pickpockets tend to dress-to-impress for their crimes as they need to blend into their environment to avoid suspicion. This is important to do when they are in crowds such as on public transport, in restaurants and bars, or in hotel lobbies. It’s important to be aware of your belongings at all times, even in areas where you think you can drop your guard, such as your hotel.

Finally, never underestimate these thieves. Many of them have been doing the same simple tricks and successfully fooling tourists for years. They are smart and extremely quick, so the only way to beat them is to make sure you are always aware and careful with who you talk to, where you go and how you protect your items.
