Swayin’ in San Fran! [S.O.F.T.]

Jun 05, 2017

“The coldest winter I have ever spent was a summer in San Franscisco.” -Mark Twain

The single, older, female traveller is still in San Francisco, coming to terms with travelling solo… hotel lobby

How those hippies ran around in kaftans at their love-ins I will never know… It is freezing here! They were probably stoned! I am also finding that the earth moves in San Fran. At first I thought it was PCS (Post Cruise Syndrome), because I would sway when I was walking, looking furtively around to see who had observed my swaying, a real drunken sailor gait. The hotel gently shakes and sways to my beat as well. At first I thought it was one of those fault lines, then it was the cable cars outside in Powell street, or maybe it is all three. Who knows, but I am swayin’ in San Fran!

I ate a corned Beef Reuben on rye, which was a better option than peanut butter and jelly. Quite surprised by the food, it was all vegan, organic, gluten free, slow food heaven! BUT, I was asked for my ID at Walgreens when I bought a bottle of wine… Obviously I look 16. God bless Walgreens, keeping the streets safe from drunken seniors!

I am having no problems travelling solo now. I am actually enjoying it!

My hotel is funky, an old turn of the century hotel built in 1915. It has had a huge retro reno and is quite hip, and central to everything. I almost expected dancing girls and gangsters to come gallivanting out of the rooms.

Tasted the wine at Sonoma County (I just love saying county and sheriff!) the scenery was the same as South Australia, but the whites were bitter. A little bit of cardboard cask to them. Tomorrow I am moving hotels and starting my two week tour. My new hotel is only 4 blocks away but at the top of one of those steep hills. It is impossible to drive my two new slider, wheelie suitcases up that hill. Next time I promise to travel light! I have had to suffer the indignity of standing in one of those enormous queues at American Post, 3 times to post clothes home. Mainly evening outfits from the cruise I did first, and my god it is so expensive!

Have you been to San Fran? What did you enjoy most about it?
