Scenic roads in Europe worth exploring on your next trip

From glistening green countrysides to quaint cobblestone lanes, there’s so much to explore on a trip through Europe. But while you might be tempted to take the speed train from one country to another, or a quick flight between cities, there’s much joy that can come from watching the passing scenery through the car window. So, the next time you’re in the area think about going the long way round and exploring the area from behind the wheel on one of these scenic roads in Europe.

1. Ring of Kerry, Ireland

Don’t let the winding roads put you off, because a slow drive on this circular route is a wonderful introduction to some of the small villages and towns in Ireland. You’ll pass through the Iveragh Peninsula and visit the picturesque towns along the way. Visit the Old Barracks and Ross Castle while you’re here and don’t forget to take in the views at Derrynane, Caherdaniel.

2. Trollstigen, Norway

Trollstigen, or The Trolls Road as it is known in English, is a feast for the senses. This 100km road will take you over mountain slopes and past rushing waterfalls. Just wait until you drive over the bridge that will take you across the Stigfossen waterfall. It will get your heart pumping, that’s for sure.

3. Les Trois Corniches, France

If you’re going to visit the French Riviera, you might as well get the best views possible while you’re here. From Nice to Menton, the three Corniche roads are some of the most scenic in France and provide dramatic views of the coastal areas and seaside landscapes. Given the word corniche means cliff in French, you can rest assured that there will be plenty of cliffhanging moments on this road trip. But each of the three routes are not without their charm with beautiful chateaux, mountainous villages and the odd Roman ruin dotted along the way.

4. Great Dolomite Road, Italy

Anyone who has driven through Europe will know that there will be times you will be left scratching your head looking for road signs, and the same must be said of the Great Dolomite Road in Italy. If you’re a bit concerned, you might like to begin your route in Bozen, which is known for its well-paved roads and good signage. Be ready for an adventure, though, because the roads are windy and narrow, but the mountainous Italian scenery will surely make up for that.

5. The Military Road, England

Originally built in the 1860s as part of a defence network, the Military Road runs from Blackgang to Freshwater in the southeast of the Isle of Wight. Part of the A3055 coastal road, erosion has threatened its closure, but remains a popular route in England as it is one of the only main roadways in the region.

6. Route One, Iceland

Imagine driving past thermal springs, active volcanoes and beneath a bright sky set ablaze by the ethereal Northern Lights. Well, that and so much more is possible on a road trip along the Ring Road in Iceland. Also known as Route One, this road traces the entire country over more than 1,200km. Stop by one of the small villages, look out for native wildlife or stop and take in the view of some magical mountains and waterfalls.
