There was once a famous sea captain, who was renowned the world over for his success at guiding merchant ships through difficult waters.

He was admired by his crew and fellow captains, but there was one thing that puzzled people about him.

Every morning he carried out the same strange ritual. He would lock himself in his captain’s quarters and open a small locked safe. In the safe was an envelope with a piece of paper inside. He would stare at the paper for a minute, and then lock it back up. Then he would go about his daily duties.

For years this went on, and his crew became very curious. Was it a treasure map?  Was it a letter from a long lost love? Everyone speculated about the contents of the strange envelope.

One day the captain sadly died at sea. After the crew had laid his body to rest, the first mate led them into the captains’ quarters. He opened the safe, took out the envelope and opened it.

The first mate turned pale, as he read out the four words scrawled on the scrap of paper.

“Port Left. Starboard Right.”
