New figures have revealed that nearly a third of Tigerair flights from Brisbane to Sydney and Melbourne arrive late. The figures also show that Tigerair passengers were the most likely to have their flights cancelled.
While the low-cost airline is known for its cheap flights and basic in-flight comforts, the data are a good indication that you really do get what you pay for.
The Federal Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics released its annual report on domestic aviation performance, which found Tigerair had the worst on-time performance stats of Australia’s leading airlines.
Qantas came out on top with 84.7 per cent of arrivals and 85.8 per cent of departures on schedule. Virgin Australia came second, and Jetstar flew into third place.
But the results revealed that 29 per cent of Tigerair services to Sydney and Melbourne were late getting to their destinations – a particularly big problem for passengers who have connecting flights. Overall, across the airlines there was a rise in flight cancellations, as well as a drop-in on time-performance.
Jetstar had the most cancellations on the Sydney route, while Virgin Australia was close behind. Qantas was the most reliable when it came to flight cancellations on both the Sydney and Melbourne routes.
The Sunshine Coast to Melbourne route was identified as the most likely to be late nationally, with more than 35 per cent of departures and 30 per cent of arrivals running late. Ayres Rock had the worst record nationwide for delayed departures.
Qantas is not only Australia’s most on-time airline. The airline also has the best customer service rating, according consumer research agency Roy Morgan.
Last year was a massive year for the airline, which reported the second-best financial performance in it’s 97-year history.
Topping that result off, Qantas won the Domestic Airline and Domestic Business Travel Airline of the Year in the annual Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction Awards, which were announced last week.
Michele Levine, CEO of Roy Morgan, said of the airline: “Australia’s longest-running airline is also highly attuned to the needs of business travellers, winning the Domestic Business Travel Airline of the Year with ease. Winning a monthly award for customer satisfaction is no easy feat, and to pull it off every month of the year in 2017 is truly remarkable”.
