1. Look out for early bird or last minute specials

Many cruises will offer you a discount if you book early in the season. You may find temperatures are a little cooler, but if you are willing to have a cheaper fare for the trade off, it can be worth it. Conversely cruise companies may find that they have unfilled rooms that they need to fill fast. For this reason last minute room specials can become available at heavily discounted rates. Your travel agent may be able to help you find these or you can discover some yourself via some of the popular cruise sale finder websites.

2. Buy travel insurance

As the old saying goes “if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel”. A medical emergency could happen and you could have a hefty medical bill to pay. So, safeguard your cruise holiday by purchasing a travel insurance policy that covers trip cancellation, trip delay, travel medical expenses, medical evacuation and, if possible, cancel for any reason coverage. Study the product disclosure statement in detail for any exclusions and be sure to purchase the right amount of cover for your needs.

3. Don’t go overboard on the wardrobe

Resist the temptation to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe for the cruise. Instead take stock of the items you already own. Cruise cabins can be quite small so you don’t want a chocked full wardrobe of clothing that you might not get around to wearing. Instead take a look at the items you already own and mix and match. You may find that a couple of great dresses that can take you from day to night with a set of heels. Skirts and short can be changed around with various tops and don’t forget to throw some accessories in the mix to keep you look fresh.

4. Set a budget beforehand, then stick to it

Before you jump on board the boat decide how much you want to pay for extras and stick to your plan. Review you tab daily to make sure you and your cruise partner are sticking to budget (trust me it is easy to get carried away!). If you do find you had splurge day balance it out with a budget day the following. Also make sure to confer with your partner before purchasing any ‘additional extras’ on the cruise.

5. Watch the beverages

Find out which drinks are free on your cruise and which you will need to pay for. Water, juice, tea and coffee are often free so opt for these if you are on a budget. Alternatively, if you intend on drinking alcoholic beverages consider pre-purchasing a drinks package. You should also find out what times happy hour or drinks specials are on to purchase any drinks during this time and stick to the free drinks around it. Also, some cruise liners also allow you to bring your own wine onboard but will charge you a corkage fee. Be sure to find out first before you cruise whether this is a possibility.

6. Don’t gamble

The bright lights of the casino, daily bingo and luring competitions, and prizes can be very tempting on board. But if you are on a budget it is best to avoid these completely. Instead opt for some fun non-monetary games. Grab some board games to play with you new cruise friends or play bowls or botchi on deck. These are far more sociable and you are sure to find them far more rewarding!

7. Be savvy with internet access

Internet onboard is notoriously slow and expensive. To save money avoid using the internet on board and find an internet café when you are in port. Or you may want to consider pre-purchasing and bringing with you a USB modem with international roaming for the trip. Also be sure to turn off your data on your mobile phone and be aware of the costs of internet access and mobile data internationally. You don’t want a nasty surprise at the end of your trip!

8. Skip the premium experiences

Premium dining, spa treatments, fitness classes and access to exclusive areas can enjoyable, but come at a price and will be added to your cruise bill. Before going ahead with any of these be very aware of the costs and consider skipping them and use the money for memorable experiences ashore.

9. Do it yourself tours

Some shore excursions should be booked through your cruise line, but you can save money by doing it yourself exploring ports on your own. Before you arrive in port you may like to book your own tour guide or hire car to have your own excursion. Or why not just take a taxi or bus to the center of town and wander around the streets. Be sure to allow plenty of time to return to your ship as it will sail without you if you do not reboard on time.
