A holiday is the perfect time to kick your heels up and have a good time, but don’t let that stop you from keeping safe while you’re abroad. One of the ways to stay safe is to start with where you’ll be spending much of your time: your hotel. Whether you’re going away for a quick weekend away or a long overseas trip, it’s worth taking all the necessary steps to ensure your hotel is as safe as possible.

When choosing what level to stay on, try and select a room that is at least on the third level. The first two levels are generally easier for people to access and could put you at risk from thieves targeting tourists in the area.
According to former British Army officer, Rob Walker, it’s safer to choose a hotel lower than level six in the building. That way, in the event of a natural disaster or a fire, you’re able to exit the hotel as quickly and as safely as possible.
It doesn’t hurt to ask for specific requests, so while you’re at it you might as well ask for a room close to an emergency exit. That way, if something was to occur in the building, like a fire or other events, you can make your way out with as little fuss as possible.
If you’re travelling alone and want to make sure you’re as safe as possible in your hotel, then ask for a room near the elevator. While it might be a little more noisy, these rooms are often in higher traffic areas meaning there are less hidden corners to be approached in.
