UPDATE: A new September departure is open for bookings and filling fast!

There’s nowhere quite like India, and our latest over-60s social getaway — which sold out within weeks — gave 18 Starts at 60 readers the chance to see it in amazing depth.

This itinerary, designed and led by our much-loved Travel at 60 host Mohini, was created with heart and care especially for travellers aged 60+.

It’s not just about visiting famous places like the Taj Mahal, or searching for the wild tigers at Ranthambore. It’s also a deeper journey into the real India, discovering hidden treasures, meeting locals, and experiencing the rich culture that most visitors never get to see.

I’ve found Travel at 60 absolutely fabulous and would highly recommend them for any travel plans — they’re so good and helpful.

I’ve just returned from their Escorted India Tour, and as a lady in my late 80s travelling solo, I felt completely safe and comfortable the whole time. Everywhere we stayed was lovely, I met some wonderful people, and saw so many amazing things.

Our tour guide, Mohini, went above and beyond to make sure everyone had the best experience possible.

I rate this holiday as one of the best I’ve ever been on — I just loved it.

One of the standout meals from our trip in India was a traditional Satvik lunch — a simple yet delicious spread made without onion or garlic. It’s the kind of food often eaten by monks, based on the idea of eating clean and staying balanced.

If there’s one thing you shouldn’t miss in Varanasi, it’s a sunrise boat ride on the Ganges. As you glide past more than 80 different ghats, you’ll see locals starting their day with prayers, bathing in the river, or simply soaking up the morning calm. You’ll also pass the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor — one of the biggest redevelopments along the riverbank. There’s something really special about being out on the water at that hour, with the soft morning light catching the temples and the whole place slowly coming to life around you.

Near the base of Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi, there’s a smaller building often called the “mini Taj Mahal” — and it’s not hard to see why. It has beautiful domes, detailed stonework and a peaceful feel, all without the big crowds. It’s a lovely spot to explore if you’re visiting Humayun’s Tomb, and gives you a glimpse into the style that later inspired the famous Taj Mahal.

A visit to Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in Old Delhi. Built from red sandstone and white marble, it’s an impressive sight with its grand steps, sweeping courtyards, and striking minarets.  Modest dress is required, and shoes must be removed before entering the mosque.

One of the loveliest moments of the trip was spending a quiet morning at a bird sanctuary, cruising through on a tuk-tuk and just taking it all in. With a naturalist guiding the way, spotting everything from tiny kingfishers to soaring storks — especially with a telescope on hand to bring it all closer.

A quick stop for henna added a beautifully cultural touch. This centuries-old art form, with its intricate patterns and natural dye, felt like a little piece of India to take home.

Watch the Taj Mahal glow in the soft light of sunset accompanied with a high tea experience.

A must-have group photo in front of the iconic Lotus Temple.

Another memorable group photo, this time in front of the stunning Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds).

The evening Ganga Aarti ceremony is held every night without fail on the banks of the Ganges, this one-hour ritual is an act of devotion and thanksgiving to the river, which is considered sacred in Indian culture.
