Getting the raw prawn at Brunswick Heads

Jun 05, 2017

There’s no denying that the beaches of Byron Bay are stunning. However, if you’re tired of the touristy vibe and the hustle and bustle of this area, why not pull up 20 minutes north of Byron and check out my favourite spot, Brunswick Heads?

Ah, Brunswick Heads – how do I love thee? Let me count the ways:

1. The beautiful Brunswick River.

2. The wide open surf beach.

3. That pretty little cove that’s just perfect for families.

4. Those beautiful waterfront parks that beckon one to throw down a picnic rug and just chill.

5. An increasing selection of places to grab a coffee or linger over a meal.

6. A little ripper of a pub – the Bruns – that plays live music on the weekends (reportedly owned by John Cornell, or “Strop” as you may remember him and David Gyngell, Channel 9 Executive).

7. The Seafood Co-op, where you can buy the one that got away, along with the best fresh prawns (raw or cooked) and crabs! Either take your purchase home to cook or have a real holiday and let them cook it for you!

8. A beaut bakery in town where you can purchase all manner of sinful treats and that fresh bread to accompany your prawns.

9. A “bottlo” where you can select a “good drop” to wash it all down.

10. Last, but definitely not least, the best little caravan park – perched on the banks of the beautiful Brunswick River! We have our favourite spot to camp, but at Brunswick, you’re spoilt for choice with three caravan parks to choose from!

Now some would have to add great spots to fish, the perfect place to putt along in a tinny, paddle in a kayak, go surfing or do a bit of paddle-boarding. However this is how I see myself enjoying the ten day break that I’m so looking forward to:

A clear blue sky, the Brunswick River sparkling at full tide… Me, sitting in my camping chair on the edge of the river with a glass of crisp white (or an icy cold beer, depending on my mood) in one hand and that fresh prawn sandwich in the other!

Feet up, good book waiting for me and the afternoon stretching lazily ahead. I know, it all sounds a bit hectic but when the day crawls to a close and I’m completely exhausted, I’ll be drifting off to sleep to the sound of my favourite tinny (the Brunswick Queen) slapping gently against the water.

Yep, give me the “raw prawn” at Brunsy anytime!
