So you’re going overseas and you’re looking for style ideas?
Well, when it comes to your shoes the rules are simple.
There’s a variety of styles of shoes you can wear that will be comfortable and stylish, without making you look like a tourist.
The first thing to know is the rules of what not to wear.
Most travel bloggers and websites warn you off one wearing one style in particular – joggers or running shoes.
These will easily identify you as a tourist.
You should also avoid wearing thongs (or flip-flops or jandals for our American and Kiwi friends).
Particularly in European countries, this casual footwear is not commonly worn.
Generally, the only time you should wear thongs/jandals/flip-flops when travelling is in the shower.
So, what can you wear?
Here are six styles of shoes that are both comfortable and charming, and the best part – they won’t make you look like a tourist!
1. Boots

If you love wearing boots, why not slip on a comfortable pair for walking on your travels? One travel blogger recommends either a pair of short combat boots or higher length leather boots – that way they can be rolled up while in your backpack or suitcase. Boots are great for both women and men. Men can choose a high-top style lace up boot or a dressier style boot depending on where they’re travelling and what activities they are undertaking.
2. Flats

A ballet flat or a loafer style flat shoe can be the best travel accessory for your feet. Not only are they simple and comfortable for walking in, they can be easily dressed up or dressed down for any occasion on your trip. Try avoiding bright, out there colours or designs – they will definitely make you stand out as a tourist.

If you want a sneaker style shoe but don’t want to look like too much of a tourist, try a Converse or Chuck style shoe. Again, you should avoid bright or out there designs to blend in. Both the high tops and low top versions of these shoes are a great addition to you travel wardrobe and they’re very comfortable for walking. If you don’t want to stick to the Converse brand itself, there are plenty of brands that have a similar style shoe. These shoes can be great for men and women.
4. Slip-ons

Just like the flats, a pair of slip-ons can make for a comfortable, casual and understated addition to your travelling style. There are a range of styles and brands to suit all ages, and both men and women. The key is to pick a basic colour and design and you’ll blend in easily.
5. Loafers

They’re stylish, comfortable and versatile – and that’s why loafers make a great addition to your travelling style. For men in particular, loafers are great for travelling – particularly to European countries where they are worn quite commonly. A simple canvas loafer can be good for a casual outing or walk, while a dressy leather loafer can be good for any formal occasion while travelling.
6. Sandals
Instead of the thongs/flip-flops/jandals, pack some sandals instead. If you’re at a beachy/tropical destination, they’re perfect. You can slip them on and off easily, give your feet some breathing room and you’re not likely to look too much like a tourist. These are great for both men and women, and super comfortable if you’re walking around the streets or beach.
