While aeroplane food might not always seem very appetising, it’s definitely come a long way since the old days when a piece of dry meat and a side of steamed veggies was the only option for hungry passengers.

These days, most airlines pride themselves on the diverse range of gourmet foods they serve up for their in-flight meals and sometimes, it actually tastes surprisingly good.

United Airlines was so confident in the quality of the in-flight meals served on board that the American carrier recently released a cookbook full of recipes that have been tried and tested in the air.

The United Polaris Cookbook is being sold exclusively online at United Shop Public for AUD$42 and comes with over 40 recipes all that are directly inspired by the United Polaris on-board dining experience. Not to worry however if the state of bland economy food has never impressed you as this recipe book draws inspiration from the airline’s business class meals.

Fortunately, for those who despise airline food, the recipes in the cookbook won’t be identical to those used for in-flight meals but rather a more advanced and flavoursome version. In a teaser photo released to the public, a recipe for coconut soup with sambal oelek chicken looks particularly tasty as does the quiche and salad dish that is shown on the cover.

The recipes are compiled from both United’s Executive Chefs as well as chefs from The Trotter Project, which is a charity that works toward providing education and opportunity for culinary students.

Despite there not being a very high demand for a cookbook full of plane food, this is not the first time an airline has ventured into the culinary world.

According to Jalonpnik, fellow American carrier, Delta Airlines released a cookbook in 1987 titled, First Class Meals and in 2006, Southwest Airlines followed suit with the book, Feel the Spirit, Savor the Fare.

While the quality of in-flight meals has undoubtedly improved over the years, it’s safe to say not many travellers would think to recreate the meals in their own home.

But if you happen to be someone who has a passion for plane food than this cookbook might just be the answer to your prayers!
