The World’s Favourite Bucket List Trips (And Why We All Secretly Want the Same Holidays)

The Maldives tops the Ultimate Bucket List.

There comes a point in life when the phrase “bucket list” starts appearing with alarming regularity.

Usually somewhere between your third back-related grumble and your first serious conversation about travel insurance, someone will say: “We really should make a list of places we want to see.”

And off you go – scribbling down wildly ambitious ideas like trekking through the Himalayas, before quietly adding “nice hotel, good breakfast” underneath.

The truth is, while we all like to think our travel dreams are deeply personal and wildly original, the internet suggests otherwise. In fact, after analysing millions of searches and surveys, the world appears to have settled on a fairly consistent list of “must-do before you die” experiences.

And it turns out we are, collectively, rather predictable.

Here are the 10 bucket list trips that keep coming up – the greatest hits of global wanderlust.

1. The Maldives (or somewhere equally ridiculous)

The undisputed number one. Overwater bungalows, water so blue it looks Photoshopped, and the faint sense that you’ve wandered into someone else’s honeymoon.

2. Niagara Falls

Because sometimes what you want is not subtle beauty, but a vast, roaring wall of water reminding you that nature is, frankly, showing off.

3. Seeing the Mona Lisa in Paris

You will stand in a crowded room, craning your neck, wondering why it’s smaller than expected – and still feel oddly satisfied you’ve done it.

4. Bora Bora

Like the Maldives, but with a slightly different shade of envy attached. Another triumph of turquoise water and life decisions.

5. The Statue of Liberty

A classic. A symbol. Also an excellent opportunity to say, “Well, we’re in New York…” which justifies everything that follows.

6. The Northern Lights

Possibly the only bucket list item that requires both patience and thermal underwear. Worth it, though – when the sky decides to perform.

7. The Taj Mahal

Proof that love, when properly funded, can produce something spectacular.

8. The Burj Khalifa (Dubai)

The world’s tallest building – because if you’re going to look at a city, you might as well do it from an unreasonable height.

9. The Eiffel Tower / Paris skyline

Still holding its place on bucket lists everywhere, largely because Paris has done an excellent job marketing itself as the answer to most life questions.

10. Machu Picchu (or similar “epic” trek)

The point at which your bucket list briefly imagines you as far fitter than you currently are.

Machu Picchu is well worth the journey

So what does this tell us?

Mainly that we all want the same three things:

  • Beauty (preferably with water involved)
  • Iconic landmarks (so we can say we’ve been)
  • A good story to tell afterwards

There’s also a pattern of contrast. We want relaxation and achievement. A week doing nothing in the Maldives, followed by a photo of us looking heroic on a mountain we absolutely struggled to climb.

And perhaps that’s the real appeal of a bucket list. It’s not just about ticking things off — it’s about imagining slightly better versions of ourselves. More adventurous. More cultured. Possibly fitter.

Whether we get there or not is, of course, another matter entirely.

But in the meantime, we’ll keep adding to the list. And quietly moving Machu Picchu further down it.
