The France Most Travellers Never See

There is a version of France that most visitors never reach, the one found not in a queue outside a monument, but in a lavender field outside Roussillon, at a Bordeaux market before sunrise, or inside a private classical concert echoing through the orchards of a château on the banks of the Seine. It is this France, layered, local and unhurried, that Scenic has built its truly all-inclusive ultra-luxury river cruising collection around, immersing guests in the heart of French life and culture through experiences designed to reveal the country from the inside out.

Scenic’s purpose-built Space-Ships carry a maximum of just 163 guests along the Seine, Saône, Rhône, Garonne and Dordogne rivers, docking in the heart of towns rather than on their outskirts. The result is less time in transit and more time wandering local markets, lingering in village squares and discovering the people, traditions and flavours that define each region. Everything from personal butler service and premium beverages and up to five dining experiences is included, but it is Scenic’s philosophy of deeper cultural immersion that truly distinguishes the journey.

Rather than rushing between landmarks, Scenic designs its itineraries around meaningful moments. Guests can cook with local ingredients sourced from regional markets, enjoy private performances in historic estates, meet artisans preserving generations-old traditions and spend longer in the places that reveal the authentic character of France. It is luxury measured not only by comfort, but by access.

The line’s exclusive Scenic Culinaire cooking school, available aboard Scenic Sapphire and Scenic Diamond, begins in Bordeaux’s bustling food markets.

Food and wine sit at the very centre of a Scenic journey, just as they do in French culture itself. The line’s exclusive Scenic Culinaire cooking school, available aboard Scenic Sapphire and Scenic Diamond, begins in Bordeaux’s bustling food markets. During the signature Shop with a Chef experience, guests join Scenic’s expert chefs to select seasonal produce, cheeses, oysters, truffles and regional delicacies before returning to the ship for an interactive cooking class inspired by the flavours of France. Along the way, they gain a deeper appreciation for the wines, Cognac and Calvados that have shaped the region’s culinary identity. In Bordeaux, one of the world’s most celebrated wine regions, the relationship between landscape, history and every glass of wine becomes truly tangible as guests journey between vineyards and centuries-old châteaux along the Garonne and Dordogne.

Art, music and history receive the same immersive treatment through Scenic Enrich, a collection of exclusive experiences created solely for Scenic guests. In Bordeaux, travellers enjoy private access to Les Bassins des Lumières, a spectacular former World War II submarine base transformed into one of the world’s most remarkable digital art galleries, where an exclusive immersive exhibition is presented after hours. Along the Seine, guests wander through the orchards of Château de La Roche-Guyon before taking their seats for an intimate classical concert performed by regional musicians within the estate itself. These experiences, exclusive to Scenic, are designed to create genuine connections with each destination.

In Provence, guests can wander through the ochre-coloured streets of Roussillon before visiting a local lavender producer and the Lavender Museum,

For travellers who enjoy shaping their own days, Scenic Freechoice offers a selection of included excursions tailored to different interests and activity levels. In Provence, guests can wander through the ochre-coloured streets of Roussillon before visiting a local lavender producer and the Lavender Museum, learning how one of France’s most iconic scents has become woven into the region’s identity. Along the Seine and Normandy coast, history comes to life on a guided visit to the Somme battlefields and the Australian National Memorial, a particularly moving experience for Australian travellers seeking a deeper understanding of the country’s wartime connection to France.

Wellness also forms part of the Scenic experience in ways few travellers expect. Scenic is the first and only river cruise line to feature a therapeutic Salt Therapy Lounge aboard its Space-Ships, complementing the onboard wellness facilities and offering guests another opportunity to unwind between immersive days ashore.

Across Scenic’s France collection, from Bordeaux Affair and Normandy & Gems of the Seine to Spectacular South of France, as well as longer journeys combining France with London and the French Riviera, travellers discover a country that extends far beyond its famous landmarks. Each region reveals its own distinct personality: the gastronomic pride of Lyon, the world-renowned vineyards of Bordeaux, the artistic heritage of the Seine Valley, the fragrant lavender fields of Provence and the timeless elegance of the Côte d’Azur.

For those wanting to understand France through its food, wine, art, history and the people who preserve its traditions, Scenic offers a rare kind of luxury. It is measured not by unrivalled inclusions, time, access and authenticity: a chance to slow down, linger longer and discover the France that many travellers never see.

The new Emerald Lumi ship.

A New Way to See the Seine Is Taking Shape

In July 2026, Emerald Cruises & Tours reached an important milestone with the ceremonial launch of Emerald Lumi, as the company’s newest Star-Ship entered the water for the first time at its Romanian shipyard. The launch marks the beginning of the countdown to her inaugural season on France’s Seine River in 2027.

Purpose-built for the Seine, Emerald Lumi has been designed to unlock parts of the river that many larger vessels cannot reach. At 110 metres long and carrying no more than 130 guests, she will sail from Paris to the historic port of Honfleur, docking in the heart of cities and towns, and offering a more intimate cruising experience.
Spacious staterooms and suites feature innovative all-weather balconies, while guests can unwind in the Reflections Restaurant, Horizon Bar & Lounge or beside the heated indoor pool, which transforms into a cinema after dark. Practical touches haven’t been overlooked either, with a self-service laundry included on board.

From March 2027, Emerald Lumi will sail the new eight-day Sensations of the Seine & Normandy itinerary, travelling round-trip from Paris. Rather than rushing between destinations, the itinerary has been designed to give travellers more time ashore, with overnight stays and later departures in destinations including Honfleur and the picturesque village of La Roche-Guyon.

Each day offers included guided touring that explores the character and history of the region, alongside a choice of EmeraldACTIVE experiences for those who prefer to discover destinations on foot, by e-bike or even by kayak.

For history enthusiasts, the journey includes visits to Claude Monet’s beloved gardens at Giverny and a full-day guided exploration of the Normandy D-Day landing beaches, museums and memorials. Food lovers will discover another side of Normandy through experiences such as a walking tour of Honfleur accompanied by fresh oyster tastings, celebrating the town’s long maritime tradition.

The itinerary also features EmeraldPLUS experiences that delve deeper into local culture, including an onboard World War II lecture and an exclusive visit to a traditional Normandy cider farm, where guests can sample handcrafted ciders alongside regional delicacies.

Emerald guests also enjoy generous inclusions from airport transfers to daily breakfast, lunch and dinner on board, complimentary drinks with meals, guided excursions, EmeraldPLUS and EmeraldACTIVE experiences, gratuities and WiFi, allowing guests to focus on the journey rather than the logistics. This means a seamless and stress-free experience where you never have to worry about taking out your wallet.

For travellers whose memories are made around the dining table, one departure offers an extra reason to book. Sailing on 7 August 2027, the special Sail the Seine with Michael & Oscar Bonacini cruise brings renowned father-and-son chefs Michael and Oscar Bonacini on board for an exclusive culinary programme, including a signature dinner on the ship and a memorable meal at La Couronne, France’s oldest restaurant and the place where Julia Child famously described enjoying the most exciting meal of her life.
