Starts at 60 is proud to welcome one of Australia’s most respected and recognisable motoring voices to our pages, with Paul Gover joining the writing team and his first column appearing this Monday.

Gover’s arrival marks the first of many new expert contributors who will be joining Australia’s number one online publication for over-60s, as we continue to expand the depth, authority and relevance of our content for readers who value experience, insight and straight-talk.

And when it comes to cars, few people have more experience – or more stories – than Paul Gover.

A lifetime in the driver’s seat

Paul Gover is widely regarded as Australia’s most experienced automotive journalist and analyst, with a career spanning more than 45 years across print, radio, television and digital media.

Over that time, he has worn almost every hat imaginable: reporter, editor, road tester, commentator, and automotive public relations expert. He has covered thousands of new-car launches, driven just about everything with four wheels, and built a reputation for telling it exactly as it is – no hype, no spin, and no confusing jargon.

His first road test? A Rambler Matador, reviewed for a local newspaper. His first major new-car launch? The Ford Falcon XD in 1979 with The Canberra Times. Since then, he has been on the new-car round continuously, watching the industry evolve from carburettors to computers and from family sedans to electric vehicles.

Most recently, Gover has been a senior writer for Wheels magazine and a judge in its prestigious Car of the Year award, which has been running since 1963.

From Bathurst to the back seat

Gover’s experience isn’t confined to the press garage. He has also been a champion racing driver, and in one of Australian motorsport’s great footnotes, once served as co-driver to Peter Brock at Bathurst – in a Peugeot.

That mix of professional insight and real-world experience is what sets him apart. Paul doesn’t just know how cars are built or marketed – he knows how they behave on the road, in traffic, and over time.

Putting the driver first

What truly defines Paul Gover’s approach is his unwavering focus on the consumer.

When he assesses a car or answers a tricky question, he does it from the perspective of the everyday driver – not the brochure, not the brand, and not the sales pitch. His benchmark is simple: what would he tell his best friend?

That friend is Mark, and they’ve been driving together since their P-plate days. If a car doesn’t pass that test, it doesn’t get a free pass.

It’s this straight-talking, customer-first mindset that makes Paul such a natural fit for Starts at 60 readers, who want clarity, honesty and practical advice – especially when it comes to one of life’s biggest purchases.

A voice you’ll recognise – and trust

Paul Gover’s personal motto says it all:

“The answer is yes, so what’s your question?”

It’s confident without being cocky, decisive without being dismissive – and perfectly sums up what readers can expect from his weekly columns. Whether he’s reviewing the latest car, unpacking industry changes, or answering reader questions, Paul brings insight shaped by decades on the road and behind the keyboard.

We’re delighted to have him on board – and this is just the beginning.
