‘I worry about where we are heading with political correctness’

The idea that political correctness has gone too far is a bit of a ‘hot potato’ at the moment. I wonder how things went so wrong over the hundreds of years that society now has to change its whole outlook to protect people from the truth.

Now that we are in our ‘classic years’, there would be many who have experienced political correctness from its inception to the current obliteration of any comfortable conversation or discussion without fear from the dreaded PC police. Who are these PC police? I’d like to know what laws have been broken if I don’t comply with an individual’s perception of how I should reference people and things.

Are we just bending over for anyone who is different? It could be argued such behaviour is making us ‘softer’ — not just as a community, but as a country too.

I feel the media has a lot to answer for regarding the application of political correctness. What better story is there than if a person can be rebuked for their use of a word. Never mind real and important news worthy events.

Surely if I have to be careful about every single thing I say, it is heading to a level that affects my freedom of speech. I wonder about the good, the bad and downright absurd aspects of political correctness. Are there people who feel they can’t speak out loud, have their say, because someone is bound to be offended?

I admit that there were some things in the past that were offensive. If they were not swept under the carpet for their offensiveness, then they were addressed and change was made. However, I feel now that the pendulum has swung too far in the opposite direction, and it is ridiculous!

Perhaps this is society saying it wants to be a bit more sensitive.

Are we becoming too easy to offend? What are your thoughts on the issue of ‘political correctness’ in your community?
