Touching video of 96-year-old man raises a question for us all

Is it ever too late to be your true self? That’s the question posed in a video on YouTube and the result is very touching.

A vlogger called Davey Wavey talked to 96-year-old Roman, who came out as gay at the age of 95, after 67 years in a straight marriage.

Roman, who has two children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, tells Davey that last year that he’d known he was gay since he was five years old and finally “wanted the world to know” his true self.

So the Los Angeles resident broke the news to his family.

“I just told them plain that I was born and was all my life gay and told them the whole tragedy of my life and they understood what happened to me,” Roman recalls. “Can you imagine, 90 years to be in the closet?”

Roman reveals shyly that he would love to have a male companion, and that looks don’t even enter the equation.

“I don’t look at the face, I look at the heart, somebody to lean against, somebody who feels the heart ticking. Nobody can do that unless you love them,” he says. “I really don’t need any physical or mental connections, but I want to, I want to sleep and have somebody close, not for any other reason but to be sure that someone cares.”

But he worries that he’s left it too late to meet a partner. “I’m too old already, who needs an old junk?” he asks.

Roman then asks Davey, a popular YouTuber who describes himself as a “gay guru and storyteller,” if he thinks he’s done the right thing in behind honest about himself.

“What do you think of me, do I have the right to come out at that age?” Roman says. “It seems to me that it’s never too late to be your true self,” Davey replies.
