Vegemite has cleverly poked fun at its British cousin Marmite and the English cricket team as the beloved Aussie company took out a full-page ad in the UK’s Daily Mirror newspaper following Australia’s recent Ashes comeback win.

The tongue-in-cheek campaign was launched in response to a sneaky promotion by Marmite, after it was revealed that free jars of “Britain’s favourite savoury toast topper” will be handed out at matches over the next six weeks in a bid to try and “bowl over” Aussie cricket fans.

“The ‘Marmy Army’ is a brand-new group formed of loyal and faithful Marmite fans. The newly established team will be outside the UK’s major cricket grounds, hoping to bowl over Aussies with the taste of Marmite and declare them lovers of Britain’s favourite savoury toast topper,” Marmite announced on Wednesday via social media.

Vegemite, however, was not having a bar of it and, in true blue style, has since fired back with a very Aussie response, taking out a full-page ad in the Daily Mirror purely to brag about Australia’s sensational Ashes win this week.

“G’day, news has reached down under that free jars of Marmite are being handed out at the Ashes to try to prove it tastes better than our Vegemite,” the ad read.

“Are you guys barmy? Of course the refined English palate will prefer yours.

“You see, Vegemite is a far stronger taste, made of resilience and fortitude with a dash of cunning and guile.”

The ad continued: “Vegemite tastes like back to back tons on your return Test. Vegemite tastes like a come from behind victory by 251 runs.

“You lot won’t like the taste of Vegemite. Because Vegemite tastes like Australia. Catch ya at Lord’s.”

Sharing the hilarious ad on social media, the company wrote: “We wish @Marmite all the best but don’t expect Aussies to be bowled over by their antics at the cricket. So, we took action by running a full page ad in the @DailyMirror… Catch ya at Lord’s!”

The post has since had thousands of likes and shares across social media with many users throwing support behind the Aussie breakfast staple.

“On behalf of all of Australia, well played Vegemite. Well played,” one commentator wrote.

Another added: “Outstanding from @Vegemite in the English papers #ashes.”

While a third wrote: “They have to give it away for free, because no one in their right mind would buy Marmite instead of Vegemite!”

“Very clever… Aussie Aussie Aussie,” another commentator wrote.
