An urgent recall has been issued for the popular Swisse vitamin supplement, ‘Collagen Glow gummies’ after a specific batch was found to contain traces of mould.

According to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), who issued the nationwide recall on Monday, May 16, “Consumers, retailers and health professionals are advised that Swisse Wellness Pty Ltd, in consultation with the TGA, is recalling a single batch of Swisse Beauty Collagen Glow Gummies due to contamination with mould”.

The contaminated batch number is 106188, expiry date is listed as 06/2023.

TGA described the product as “a listed medicine used to support skin elasticity, firmness and healthy glowing skin” and advised consumers who had purchased the affected batch to immediately cease consumption and “return it to the place of purchase for a refund or contact Swiss Wellness Customer Service on 1800 794 773”.

According to TGA, the detected mould “is visible to the naked eye as discolouration and texture changes to the gummies”, with the identified mould revealed to be Aspergillus penicillioides.

Aspergillus penicillioides poses a “minimal risk to the general population”, with a “remote risk that individuals who are immunocompromised could become ill if they consume product contaminated with this mould”.

TGA encouraged consumers and health professionals to report problems with medicines or vaccines for the purpose of informing TGA’s monitoring of medical products.

It’s not the first urgent recall to be made this year with a number of over-the-counter goods previously recalled from supermarket shelves over contamination fears.

Last month, an urgent recall of an over-the-counter medical supplement was issued after a number of consumers reported allergic reactions.

TGA issued the recall for Kynd Stress Relief tablets on Friday, April 22, after reports of “unexpected” negative reactions.

As reported by TGA, some users of the medication in question had reported symptoms of rash, a tingling or burning sensation on the skin, general redness and itching and swelling of the throat, tongue, eyelids and/or face.

In April, 2022, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand issued a recall for popular supermarket products including Macro Certified Organic Unsweetened Coconut Milk 1 litre and Macro Certified Organic Naturally Sweet Rice Milk 1 litre varieties after they were found to contain traces of milk despite the products being branded as being dairy free.

Coles Supermarkets also issued an urgent recall on popular Coles Baby Spinach products over fears of Salmonella contamination in early April, 2022.

Perhaps April’s most notable recall, Ferrero Australia conducted a recall of Kinder Easter Basket 120g (6x20g), Kinder Mini Eggs Hazelnut 100g, Kinder Surprise Maxi 100g and Kinder Surprise Maxi – Natoons 100 following fears of possible Salmonella contamination.

In February, 2022, popular cheese product L’Artisan Organic Marcel 180g was ripped from shelves across Australia after a recall was issued over concerns of potential E.coli contamination with popular ham products Uncle’s Ham recalled in March, 2022 after it was discovered the product was compromised by listeria contamination.
