Trump and Turnbull’s ‘great’ first face to face meeting

“We get along great.” That’s how the US President Donald Trump described his first face to face meeting with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in New York City today, after a slight delay.

When asked about the importance of the relationship with Australia and the US, Trump described his feelings for our country. “We have a fantastic relationship but I love Australia, always have.” Going on to mention his ‘friend’ Greg Norman’ was also present at the meeting, with Turnbull joining in with “We have a lot of friends in common.”

Trump said the widely reported phone call was a big exaggeration. “We had a great call,” he said, “We’re not babies.” Turnbull replied “Young at heart.”

Trump said he will come to Australia one day, ‘absolutely’ but didn’t specify when.

In commemorating the 75^th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea Trump said they would be talking about it tonight. ‘That was some battle.” While Turnbull said it saved Australia and was the turning point in the war. “We’ve been allies for 99 years,” Trump said, “and never a bad time.”

When the topic of health care was raised Trump mentioned that Australia had better health care than the US, but they were going to have great health care soon. “Obama care is dead,” Trump said.

During the interview the President was questioned over his use of social media. Trump said social media was becoming a fast, modern and great way to communicate. “Social media is the way to go.”
