The winner of an unofficial competition to design Britain’s post-Brexit passport has been announced and the choice is being hailed as a powerful statement.
Scottish graphic designer Ian Macfarlane has won first prize in the competition run by website Denzeen for his deeply moving and political design.
The front cover of the passport shows the traditional British blue bleeding into the deep red of the EU passport and the British coat of arms underneath.
Dezeen founder and editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs said the judging panel was struck by the simple power of the submission.
“It can be read as representing a smooth transition, a nostalgic return or an ominous darkening,” he said. “This makes it a worthy winner, since the brief called for a design that would represent all UK citizens.”
He went on to describe it has “an artistic statement that is ambiguous, powerful, simple and beautiful”.
Britain voted to leave the EU last year, leaving much of the country in shock and angered at the outcome of the vote. However, since then British Prime Minister Theresa May has pledged to forge ahead and establish a smooth transition out of the EU for Britain and the world.
Take a look and tell us what you think. Is this a worthy winner?
