Chad Morgan, affectionately remembered as The Sheik of Scrubby Creek, has sadly passed away, leaving behind a remarkable legacy as a towering figure in Australian country music.

Celebrated for his vaudevillian comedic style, quirky stage persona, and signature grin, Morgan’s extraordinary career spanned over seven decades, profoundly shaping the genre.

The larrikin entertainer passed away at Gin Gin hospital north of Brisbane on Wednesday, January 1 at the age of 91.

A statement announcing Morgan’s passing was shared to his website.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Chad Morgan, our beloved Australian country music legend,” the statement read.

“Chad’s unmistakable voice and larger-than-life personality will leave an indelible mark on the Australian country music community, and his warmth and kindness touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

“Chad Morgan was a pioneer of country music who devoted his life to bringing joy, laughter, and memorable melodies to audiences around the world. A true storyteller, his songs—infused with wit, charm, and emotion—captured the essence of country life and the human experience. His signature sound, blending traditional country with a sense of fun and authenticity, made him a cherished figure in the hearts of country music fans of all ages.

“Chad’s career spanned seven decades, during which he earned the respect and admiration of fellow musicians and fans alike. From chart-topping hits to unforgettable live performances, his music created memories that will last a lifetime. Known for his humility and sense of humour, Chad was always ready to share a laugh, offer a helping hand, or lift someone’s spirit with his music.

“Chad Morgan’s music and spirit will live on forever. His presence, both on and off the stage, will be greatly missed by family, friends, and his dedicated fan base around the world.”

Born February 11, 1933 in Wondai, Queensland, Morgan was the eldest of 14 children. Raised by his grandparents and later his mother, Morgan left school at 14 to work cutting timber. Despite early plans to fix his protruding teeth, fate intervened, and the characteristic grin became part of his enduring charm.

Morgan’s big break came in the early 1950s when he performed his iconic track The Sheik of Scrubby Creek on Australia’s Amateur Hour, propelling him to national fame.

Over his career, he released 18 studio albums, in addition to a number of greatest hits collections, and toured extensively, sharing stages with Slim Dusty and performing at venues like the Sydney Opera House. Dubbed the “clown prince of comedy,” his lyrics, rich with Australian slang, captured the spirit of the bush and the humour of everyday life.

Beyond music, Morgan made memorable appearances in films such as Newsfront (1978) and Dimboola (1979). His contributions to Australian culture were recognised with an OAM in 2004, and he was inducted into the Australian Roll of Renown in 1987.

Morgan continued performing until his final tour in 2024, at the age of 91.
