Older adults in Victoria will soon be able to explore the entire state without spending a cent on weekend travel, thanks to a bold new initiative.

In a major win for older Australians, Victoria is set to offer free public transport to Seniors Card holders across the entire network every weekend.

The initiative, part of the upcoming Victorian Budget 2025/26, is aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures and encouraging seniors to get out and enjoy more of what the state has to offer.

From January 1, 2026, the 650,000+ Victorians with a Seniors Myki will be able to ride trains, trams and buses for free on Saturdays and Sundays. That’s a potential saving of more than $360 a year for regular weekend travellers.

“Costs can add up – especially for seniors – and I’m on their side,” said Premier Jacinta Allan, announcing the measure.

“That’s why we’re making public transport free on weekends for seniors, saving them more than $360 every year.”

Currently, seniors are only entitled to free travel on weekends within two neighbouring fare zones — meaning longer regional trips often come with a price tag.

The government hopes the move will boost tourism across Victoria, encouraging older residents to discover regional gems, reconnect with loved ones, and simply enjoy a day out.

“We’ve added hundreds more weekend services and now we’re making it free for seniors to travel on the weekend – making public transport an even better option, whether it’s for a trip to see family or to explore Victoria,” said Minister for Public Transport Gabrielle Williams.

Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards welcomed the announcement as a game-changer for regional communities.

“We’re focused on what matters most – easing cost of living pressures and making it easier for regional seniors to get around and visit loved ones,” she said.
