Forever young: Why Australia still loves Bon Scott 46 years after goodbye

The voice was unmistakable, and so was the grin.

Bon Scott never got the chance to grow old, but one of Australia’s greatest rock frontmen has reached another milestone.

The legendary AC/DC singer would have turned 80 today and, almost half a century after his death, Australians are once again raising a glass to the man whose voice helped soundtrack their younger years.

An Aussie rock milestone

From Fremantle pubs to Melbourne’s famous AC/DC Lane, fans are celebrating the life of the Scottish-born, Western Australian-raised performer who became one of the most recognisable voices in rock.

For many Australians who grew up with AC/DC blasting from car speakers, backyard parties and local pubs, Bon was never just a singer.

He represented a particular kind of Australian rock attitude — cheeky, fearless and always ready to have some fun.

AC/DC guitarist Angus Young perhaps captured it best in a tribute marking the milestone.

“When Bon was asked, ‘Are you AC or DC?’ his answer was ‘I’m the lightning bolt in the middle,’” Young said.

“In my mind he was, and always will be the lightning bolt in the middle.”

Young said Bon gifted the world “great Rock ’n’ Roll lyrics delivered in an impish manner”.

“Cheers Bon, enjoy your birthday. Rock us all away.”

The places that keep Bon’s story alive

The milestone has sparked celebrations around Australia, and fans were invited today to make the pilgrimage to Fremantle’s Fishing Boat Harbour, where the city honoured what would have been Bon’s 80th birthday at his famous statue.

Fremantle Mayor Ben Lawver and WA Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk will join the tribute, celebrating the singer’s lasting connection to the city he called home and his influence on generations of music fans.

Meanwhile, a new mural featuring artwork by acclaimed artist and Mental As Anything co-founder Reg Mombassa has also been unveiled in Melbourne’s AC/DC Lane as part of the #Bon80 celebrations.

A tribute struck in gold

Proving Bon’s appeal stretches beyond the music, The Perth Mint has released special 80th anniversary gold and silver minted bars following the sell-out success of its Bon Scott commemorative coin in 2024.

The limited-edition pieces feature the Bon Scott logo and crest, including a lion holding a microphone in a tribute to his Scottish heritage.

The Perth Mint’s General Manager of Product Development Neil Vance said the response showed the connection fans still feel with the AC/DC frontman.

“The reaction to our Bon Scott coin showed just how deeply his music and personality still resonate with fans around the world,” Vance said.

“These minted bars capture that same energy in a new format with something that’s collectible, meaningful, and a little bit rock ’n’ roll.”

Bon’s brother Derek Scott said the family was thrilled to see the milestone marked.

“Bon would’ve had a good laugh seeing himself on gold and silver,” he said. “He always stayed true to who he was, and it’s great to see that spirit come through in these pieces.”

The voice Australia never forgot

Born Ronald Belford Scott, Bon became AC/DC’s frontman in the 1970s and helped shape the band’s rise before his death in 1980 at just 33.

But more than four decades later, the songs, the stories and the memories remain. For generations of Australians, Bon Scott wasn’t just the bloke behind the microphone… he was the lightning bolt in the middle.

How fans can celebrate Bon’s 80th
