Sinead O’Connor’s cause of death revealed one year after her passing

Fans and those close to the late Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor have found some measure of closure after authorities recently confirmed her cause of death.

O’Connor, known for her soul-stirring vocals and fearless persona, passed away at the age of 56 on July 26, 2023.

At the time, O’Connor’s family released a statement announcing the passing of the Nothing Compares 2 U hitmaker.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” the statement read.

“Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

The sudden loss of the iconic Irish singer-songwriter a year ago sent shockwaves through the music community and left her fans reeling with grief.

The world was offered some answers regarding the circumstances surrounding her untimely passing when the Southwark Coroner’s Court in London revealed that “O’Connor died of natural causes”.

Now, one year on from her passing, a copy of her death certificate has been obtained by the Irish Independent newspaper, which has confirmed that her death was a result of “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low grade lower respiratory tract infection”.

O’Connor left a lasting mark on the music scene, embarking on her journey with the acclaimed debut album, The Lion and the Cobra, in 1987. The groundbreaking success of I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got in 1990, featuring the iconic hit Nothing Compares 2 U, solidified her place in musical history.

With a total of ten studio albums, notable mentions include Am I Not Your Girl? in 1992 and Universal Mother in 1994, both achieving gold status in the UK. Faith and Courage in 2000 received gold recognition in Australia, while Throw Down Your Arms in 2005 earned gold certification in Ireland.

O’Connor’s unapologetic exploration of spirituality, activism, socio-political issues, and personal struggles resonated with fans globally, creating a devoted following.

O’Connor is survived by her three children, leaving behind a musical legacy that will continue to inspire and resonate with generations to come.
