Excitement is reaching fever-pitch among Queen fans after drummer Roger Taylor teased the possibility of the legendary rock band releasing new music.
Although the rock icons haven’t released an album since 1995’s Made In Heaven, which was released four years after the death of iconic frontman Freddie Mercury, Taylor, 75, has revealed he and guitarist Brian May, 77, “might” just have some new material for fans.
“I think we might,” Taylor told Uncut magazine.
“Brian and myself were talking the other day, and we both said that if we feel we have some good material, why not?
“We can still play. We can still sing. So I don’t see why not.”
While no confirmation was made that a new album was on the way that didn’t stop fans from sharing their excitement at the prospect on social media.
“Yes Roger! Why not indeed! Adam still on board of course!” one loyal fan wrote.
“Yes we can.”
“A Final Queen+ album I think would be a great idea. Mostly fronted by Adam Lambert but with a few other guests here and there. Like, Elton John, Tony Iommi, Danny Vaughn and Neil Murray,” commented another.
“A final album would be an immense joy for the fans, it has been awaited for so many years and yes why not be accompanied by Adam Lambert.”
The We Will Rock You hitmakers have been touring with Adam Lambert since 2012 and while the prospect of a new album has seemingly got the tick of approval from fans and even though their latest tours have earned rave reviews, May is not as optimistic about a new Queen album featuring the American Idol runner-up.
Despite some time spent in the studio, May is discouraged by Queen fans who have voiced their opposition to the idea.
“We have been in the studio. We did knock a few ideas around in the middle of one of those tours. But it just never quite reached the place where we felt it was going to be right. So we haven’t pursued it that far,” he stated in an interview with Total Guitar magazine in 2023.
“I really don’t know. But I think there’s a bit of a barrier there. I think if people see Queen on a record label, they still want it to be Freddie singing. It could be Jesus Christ on it, but they’d still want Freddie, and I don’t blame people for that.
“There are people on Instagram who get annoyed with me, ‘Why are you still carrying on without Freddie?’ And I go, ‘Don’t tell me what I should do! I do what I feel I should be doing’.”
May admits there are still some fans who are not pleased that Queen + Adam Lambert are touring, but he insists Mercury would have been happy that the band has continued to play their music.
