Hollywood icon Anjelica Huston has long been celebrated for her impressive range in both drama and comedy. However, what many of her devoted fans didn’t know until recently is that she has faced, and overcome, a personal battle with cancer.
Huston revealed her health ordeal during a recent interview with People, where she shared that, although she is now “in the clear,” her health struggles first emerged in 2019.
“That was a very serious moment for me,” she told the publication.
“I managed to survive it, and I’m proud of myself.”
Reflecting on her diagnosis, Huston confessed that the news came as a “big shock.” Yet, it also transformed her outlook on life.
“It’s not something that came lightly,” she said.
“It came as a big shock, but it made me conscious of what I shouldn’t do, of places I shouldn’t go. One of those places was taking life too seriously. So now when the opportunity arises, I laugh, and I try not to make a big deal out of things.”
Now, with her health in a much better place, Huston is especially proud of reaching a major milestone.
“I’m at the four-year mark, and that means so much to me,” she said.
“It’s a fantastic thing. I’m very proud of myself, and I’ve been very lucky. My doctors have been wonderful.”
Initially, Huston kept her diagnosis private, but after emerging from the other side of her health battle, she felt ready to share her story.
“Sometimes you feel like you don’t want to talk about it for the obvious reasons, but there’s a lot to be said for talking about it and getting it out there and celebrating the fact that one’s come through,” she said.
“Life is tenuous and wonderful. It also gives you the idea that the world is big and you can somehow match up to it. That you’re ready for whatever happens.”
Huston began her career in the late 1960s as a model before transitioning to acting in the 1970s.
She gained major recognition in 1985 with her Oscar-winning role in Prizzi’s Honor and went on to build a diverse career, starring in films such as The Addams Family, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Witches.
Known for portraying strong, complex female characters, she has earned widespread praise for her versatility in both drama and comedy. In addition to acting, Huston has directed films, including Bastard Out of Carolina and Agnes Browne.
