Former president Jimmy Carter’s modest home life revealed in new photos

He was once the most powerful man in the world but new pictures have now revealed that despite being president of the United States, Jimmy Carter prefers the simple life.

Carter, who was president between 1977 and 1981, has returned to the US$167,000 (AU$227,607 UK £130,499) home he built in Plains, Georgia, before he became president – making him the only US leader in modern times to return to the house he lived in before politics.

Speaking to the Washington Post, the 94-year-old spoke about his decision to return to the town of just 700 people and said that he never had an ambition to be rich. Still, he didn’t see anything wrong with other presidents and their wives cashing in after leaving the White House.

Instead, he’s made a living off writing books – 33 to be exact. These have ranged from his life and career, to women’s rights, ageing and even a children’s book.

He’s shunned private jets and fancy mansions in favour of a two-bedroom home. According to the report, Carter costs US taxpayers less than any other ex-president. His $456,000 a year that covers his pension, office and staff is less than half of that George H.W. Bush, as well as Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

He lives with wife Rosalynn, who he married in 1946 and stays active in his older age by teaching Sunday School at the local Maranatha Baptist Church every fortnight. During the interview, he revealed he also does the dishes after every meal and goes on daily walks with his wife down the streets they’ve been walking in Plains since the 1920s.

He also used the interview to slam current president Donald Trump.

“I think he’s a disaster,” he told the Washington Post. “In human rights and taking care of people and treating people equal.”

He said that Trump isn’t telling the truth and that hurts everything, but is hopeful Americans will “return to what’s right and what’s wrong, and what’s decent and what’s indecent, and what’s truthful and what’s lies.”

Plains is the same town Carter’s own parents lived in and he even revealed he uses their old house as an office. Carter survived a frightening health scare in 2015 when melanoma was found on his liver and brain. Thankfully, radiation and chemotherapy has meant he’s now cancer-free.
