The Matildas have endured a difficult start to their Olympic journey after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Germany in their opening match of the Paris 2024 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.
Germany began the match with confidence, taking the lead early with a goal from Marina Hegering. She headed in a precise corner delivered by Giulia Gwinn, giving Germany a 1-0 advantage.
The first half was tightly contested, with both teams battling for control but unable to break through again, leaving Germany to go into the break with their slim lead intact.
In the second half, Australia came out strong, pushing forward with attacks primarily led by Ellie Carpenter and Hayley Raso. Germany, however, threatened first with a long-range shot from Jule Brand that narrowly missed the target.
Australia started to find their rhythm, creating several promising opportunities. Clare Wheeler and Mary Fowler both had close calls in the 60th and 61st minutes but couldn’t convert their chances.
Germany increased their lead in the 64th minute when Lea Schüller capitalised on another well-placed corner from Gwinn.
Australia tried to respond, but soon after, Germany struck again. Sarai Linder made a swift pass to Jule Brand, who finished expertly to secure a 3-0 victory for Germany.
Matildas captain Steph Catley said the loss was “definitely a wake-up call” for the side.
“That’s tournament football. We’ve got two more games and we’ve got to turn it around quickly,” she told Channel 9 following the match.
“We’ve got a lot to learn from here. I think at times we were on top and we let two set-pieces affect the game in a very negative way.”
Despite the disappointing result, fans quickly rallied to console the Aussie team, reminding them that “it’s not over yet” as they prepare for their next match.
Heads high girls, go again.
