Supermarket giant Coles has come under fire for seemingly increasing the number of unassisted checkouts during peak hours after a shopper took to social media to complain about being forced to scan and bag their own groceries.

Sharing his rant online with a video captioned “Anyone else sick of no staff on tills?”, TikTok user Dazza said he “might be lazy” but he’s sick and tired of the supermarket abandoning the standard checkout system.

“So it’s just before 6 o’clock at night at Coles and as usual, not a single till is open with anyone to serve you,” he can be heard saying as the camera shows the contents of his trolley.

“Has anyone else had a gut full of this and are you changing supermarkets because of it?

“Because I don’t know about you, but I just want to buy my groceries and have someone scan them and put them in a bag. I don’t really want to scan them myself.

“I know that might be lazy or whatever, but I go to a supermarket like Coles for service and if I wanted to do it myself I may as well go to ALDI.

“What is everyone else finding out there? Local one has no staff at peak times?”

Other shoppers shared their frustrations in the comment section of the video, with many saying they “refuse” to use the self-checkout option.

“I refuse to go through self serve, they don’t pay me a wage,” one shopper said.

“It’s even worse when you think about all the jobs that have been lost,” said another.

“Worst this, they have the staff, and the staff want to work. Woollies and Coles have cut rostered hours by something like 40 per cent just to save a coin,” someone claimed.

However, there were shoppers who disagreed, saying the self-serve option is preferable.

“I like self service because I don’t want to talk to people,” one said.

“I will only use self service, best thing ever!,” commented another.

“Nah. Self service is amazing,” someone else said.

Speaking to 7News, a representative for Coles said the reason for unassisted checkouts is that “self-serve checkouts are a preferred choice of checkout for many customers and offer convenience and efficiency.”

“We are providing more choice to our customers in how they can choose to check out in our stores.

“Of course, if a customer would prefer to be served by a team member they are still available to happily serve them at the check-out.”
