A man has been charged with the murder of Melbourne woman Joanne Howell, almost 14 years after the former Countdown singer was assaulted and strangled in her home.
Victoria Police confirmed the news in a statement on Wednesday, revealing a 66-year-old Casterton man was arrested at his home address and subsequently interviewed by police. According to the police report, he has been charged with one count of murder, and will face Hamilton Magistrates’ Court shortly.
“The charge follows the death of 51-year-old Joanne at her Poath Road apartment on 21 April, 2007,” Victoria Police said in the statement. The arrest comes after police appealed for further information relating to the cold case last month.
According to a 7News report, Howell, was found severely injured in her Poath Road apartment in Hughesdale, in Melbourne’s south east, about 11.20pm on April 21. It’s believed she was attacked some time after 8.30pm that night.
The Melburnian was a well-known singer who performed on the ABC music show Countdown alongside Aussie stars Molly Meldrum and John St Peeters.
