Legendary singer-songwriter Billy Joel has offered fans a candid update on his health as he continues to battle a brain disorder.
The 76-year-old was recently diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a neurological disorder caused by fluid buildup in the brain. The condition, which primarily affects people over 65, can produce symptoms similar to dementia, but in many cases, it is treatable or even reversible with the right care.
Following his diagnosis, Joel’s team announced via social media that the singer would be stepping away from performing while undergoing physical therapy.
“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,” Joel said at the time.
In a new episode of comedian Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast released Monday, July 21, Joel opened up about his ongoing recovery and reassured fans that he is in good spirits.
“My balance sucks,” he said. “It’s like being on a boat.”
“I feel good. They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I’m feeling
“It’s not fixed. It’s still being worked on,” he added.
The update comes after Joel’s wife shared a heartfelt message on social media thanking fans for their “love and support” after the Uptown Girl singer shared news of his diagnosis.
Alexis Roderick Joel took to Instagram and shared an emotional message to fans regarding his condition.
Roderick Joel posted the message alongside a family photo of the pair with their two daughters, thanking everyone for their “love and support” and explained how grateful they are for their father and husband’s “wonderful care and swift diagnosis”.
“Bill is beloved by so many, and to us, he is a father and husband who is at the center of our world,” Roderick Joel said.
“We are hopeful for his recovery.
“We look forward to seeing you all in the future.”
