Robert F Kennedy Jr, the US health secretary, says his boss US President Donald Trump “eats really bad food,” especially when travelling.
He mainly eats junk food, Kennedy said on a podcast with Katie Miller – for security reasons but also because he trusts the products of large companies.
Trump, Kennedy said on the Tuesday podcast, “doesn’t want to get sick when he’s on the road”.
“If you travel with him you get this idea that he’s just pumping himself full of poison all day long and you don’t know how he’s walking around, much less being the most energetic person, you know, any of us have ever met.”
When asked who has the most unusual eating habits, Kennedy replied it was the president, and that “I don’t know how he’s alive, but he is”.
However, Kennedy added that the president “actually does eat pretty good food usually,” when at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida or the White House.
He described Trump as being in “incredible health,” and having “the constitution of a deity”.
While there is no official nutritional study of Trump’s eating habits, multiple reports from journalists, former aides and public comments over many years provide a consistent picture of his diet.
Trump has long been known for his preference for fast food, a habit he has openly acknowledged. On the campaign trail, he was frequently reported to favour meals from major fast-food chains, particularly McDonald’s and KFC. According to several accounts, his typical McDonald’s order included Big Macs, Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, fries and a chocolate milkshake.
Steak is another well-documented favourite, with Trump reportedly preferring it well done and often accompanied by ketchup. Former staff and media profiles have also cited meatloaf as a regular meal, based on a recipe from his mother.
In addition to main meals, Trump is said to have a strong liking for packaged snacks and sweets. Reports have mentioned his fondness for vanilla ice cream, candy such as Starbursts and Tootsie Rolls, and potato chips including Doritos and Lay’s. At official White House events, his preference for two scoops of ice cream while others received one was widely noted.
Trump’s beverage of choice is consistently reported to be Diet Coke. Multiple sources have claimed he consumed as many as a dozen cans a day.
Breakfast appears to be irregular. Trump has said in interviews that he often skips breakfast, but when he does eat it, he prefers traditional fare such as bacon and eggs. Some reports also note occasional consumption of salads or seafood, including shrimp and crab, though these appear less frequently in accounts of his diet.
