Do you travel a fair bit and want to be able to easily share photos with your kids, without sharing them widely on social media?  Well I’ve got the solution for you!  It is time you set up a secret Facebook group… the best way to share photos privately amongst a couple of people, without “oversharing”.

My mother in law travels a fair bit, and we, the kids semi regularly get emails with large attached images that take quite a while to download.  She’s trying her hardest to use the technology available to share… but there really is a better way… Use Facebook, but use it secretly.

I don’t like posting photos of myself travelling overseas on my Facebook wall when I know I am away for a long period.  Firstly it makes me uncomfortable knowing that people can possibly know I won’t be home for an extended period, and secondly, I certainly don’t want to “show off” to Facebook acquaintances (well, not very often).  But, I do like to share my close family and very close friends, and I think I have found the perfect way.

I have, before my last trip overseas, set up a “secret” Facebook group to which only a handful of my best friends, parents and siblings are invited.  Then, when I am travelling, I upload pictures daily into this group, whenever I am in my hotel on WIFI.  It is a very convenient way of updating people on what we’ve seen and done in the last day or two, and a beautiful way to share the sights with those who really love that you are seeing them.  And the great thing is, they only appear on the walls of the people that have been invited to the group.  No one else is any the wiser that you are travelling, sharing or seeing anything new.

And better than that, you no longer have to worry about who you forgot to include on the email.  When you upload a photo to a Secret Facebook Group, it goes on everyone in the group’s wall.

How to set up a Secret Group

1.  Go to your Facebook Profile page

2.  Click on Groups

3.  In the top right corner is a green box called ADD GROUP – Click on it

4.  Give your group a name, and invite those you really want to be in it… and, if you want it to be truly secret… select SECRET GROUP.  Then, when you’ve clicked CREATE your group will be ready to go.

5.  Then you can, much like your Facebook page, upload a header image.

6.  It is then just like a Facebook wall EXCEPT only the people invited can see it, and it is not searchable.  You can even upload short videos to share with your loved ones in one go.

7.  And it stays there, even when you don’t use it, and you can pick up from your last holiday when you go to a new holiday.

Go on… surprise your kids by setting up a secret group on Facebook and using it on your next trip.

Have you or any of your friends used a secret group on Facebook to share stories with each other privately?
