Grandchildren are the light to most grandparents’ lives, days spent with them are longed for and time is never taken for granted.
It is not uncommon for a grandparent to want to claim the favourite card over others, however, it is never fun to be on the other side, when you perhaps don’t receive quite as many hugs, kisses and “I love you’s”.
That is the case for one upset gran who is finding it difficult to understand why her almost 3-year-old grandson complains he wants his other nanny.
Taking to popular online forum Gransnet for advice, the gran said she spends ample time with the little boy, who stays at her house once a week with usually no problems.
“Today when I went to collect him from nursery I was hurt and embarrassed when he said ‘I want nanny,’ (mum’s mum) when he saw me,” she explained.
“I gave him a hug and said that today he was going to do fun things with grandma. He’s been fine since.”
Unsure whether she is being over sensitive or if it is a cause for concern, the gran reached out to other forums users to see if it was a common problem experienced by many.
Most were understanding of the issue, claiming it’s completely normal for little ones to say things like that.
“It is just part of the wee one trying to find their place in the world. I remember calling at the other granny’s house with a message and my beloved grandson refused to even look at me, then he was at mine the next week and was as sunny as ever. Seems I had strayed out of my defined territory, you did good hugging him,” one person commented.
“Another vote for, don’t take it to heart. Just say something like ‘well you’ve got me today’. Don’t let your grandson see it bothers you (kids can be so cruel lol),” another added.
A third simply said: “Let it wash by you.”
While others took more of a harsh approach, with a fellow gran saying: “Yes you are being over sensitive, he’s three! I expect if the other nanny had turned up he’d have wanted you, as you said he had a great time with you. He was probably just over tired.”
