Mourners are a funeral service in Germany were accidentally served hash cake in a shocking mix-up, leaving many of them feeling dizzy and nauseous, local police have reportedly claimed.

According to AP, the funeral in Wiethagen ended on an involuntary drug high when family and friends gathered at a restaurant for coffee and cakes following the burial, as is a tradition in the area. However, the seemingly innocent cakes were allegedly laced with the drugs – and it resulted in 13 people suffering symptoms and having to receive medical treatment.

An investigation by police reportedly found that the staff member at the restaurant who was put in charge of organising the cakes had asked her 18-year-old daughter to bake them. The daughter is claimed to have made two batches – one normal one intended for the funeral and one for her to take to a separate event.

When it came time to get the cakes out of the freezer, it’s alleged the mother took the wrong batch for the funeral. Police reportedly said the 18-year-old is now under investigation. According to AP, while the incident happened in August it wasn’t made public until now out of respect for the mourners.

While this incident ended in a nightmare, it’s not the first time things have gone wrong at a funeral. Just weeks ago, guests were left in shock when a snake catcher had to be called to a burial in Australia to retrieve a snake that had slithered into the open grave.

The service at Leppington Cemetery, south-west of Sydney, was stalled briefly while Cory Kerewaro from Reptile Relocation Sydney used a step ladder to descend down into the grave, before pulling out a red-bellied black snake. Mourners could be seen standing around the edge watching the drama unfold, before they were able to continue their service.

Sharing photos from the day, Cory revealed the moment he stepped down under the ground, before holding up the snake to the camera for all to see. He even captured a close-up photo of the slithery creature in amongst the recently upturned soil. He has since told the Daily Mail the casket was actually already being lowered before someone spotted the snake below it.

“I received a phone call from the funeral saying there was a snake,” he told the news outlet. “They were in a service and they had already began lowering the casket but had to pull it back up.”

While he explained he initially tried to capture the snake from the ground, he was eventually forced to step down into the grave himself to catch it. He admitted: “It certainly held the service up for a little bit.”

Network Seven later aired video footage of the moment on morning show Sunrise, and viewers shared their shock as they watched the event unfold. One wrote: “The poor family. Sometime down the track, I hope that they can have a laugh about it,” while another added: “I’m a snake lover. If this happened at my funeral I’d be there watching and probably laughing at the reactions.”

And while most funerals are typically very sombre occasions, some people like to lighten the mood voluntarily when it comes to planning their own. That was the case recently when a group of mourners in Ireland were given the shock of their lives as the deceased came up with a cheeky plan to ensure he had the last laugh.

Knowing he was ill, the Irish prankster, named by the BBC as Defence Forces veteran Shay Bradley, 62, decided to record a final message for his nearest and dearest and arranged for it to be played at his funeral, injecting a touch of humour into what was otherwise a very sad occasion. According to the news outlet, Bradley recorded the message over a year ago with the help of his son Jonathan, as he wanted his relatives and friends to laugh at his funeral rather than cry.

Hilarious footage of the funeral was later shared online and showed the heartbroken mourners gathered by the graveside, crying and consoling each other as the coffin was lowered into the ground. The mourners then clapped and the sound of bagpipes could be heard, before something unexpected happened.

“Hello … hello … let me out!” could be heard, as the man’s closest loved ones looked around in shock, before erupting into laughter. “Where the f**k am I? Hello, hello. Let me out, it’s f**king dark in here! Is that that priest I can hear?! Let me out, hello! Who’s there? Jesus save me, I’m in the box!”

As the crowd laughed, the man’s message continued as he then erupted into a verse of ‘Hello Again’ by Neil Diamond, singing: “Hello again, hello. I just called to say goodbye.”
