Federal election 2025: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announces when Aussies will head to the polls

Australians are set to head to the polls in a matter of weeks following Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s announcement that the federal election will be held on May 3.

Following months of speculation, Albanese announced the election date following a visit to Governor-General Sam Mostyn. With just five weeks of campaigning ahead, voters will choose representatives for all 150 seats in the House of Representatives and 40 Senate positions.

During his first official speech to voters, the Prime Minister drew contrasts between his government’s achievements with the promises of Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.

He encouraged voters to reflect on how his government has been laying the groundwork for a stronger future, ahead of a campaign expected to be dominated by cost-of-living issues.

“The world has thrown a lot at Australia in uncertain times – we cannot decide the challenges that we will face, but we can determine how we respond,” Albanese told reporters in Canberra.

“Your vote has never been more important and your choice has never been more clear: this election is a choice between Labor’s plan to keep building or Peter Dutton’s promise to cut.

“The very best reason to be optimistic for our nation remains the courage, kindness and aspiration of all Australians.”

Albanese will be aiming to secure back-to-back victories, hoping to become the first prime minister since John Howard to win consecutive elections. Meanwhile, Peter Dutton will be striving to lead the coalition back to power after just one term in opposition, with hopes of becoming Australia’s 32nd prime minister.

While it’s still early days, polls are predicting a tight contest between the major parties, with minority government appearing to be a likely outcome.

The election announcement follows the release of the 2025 Budget, which Albanese’s government presented with a focus on easing the financial pressure many Australians are facing.
