American singer Ray Sawyer of Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show has died at the age of 81, according to his publicist.
Page Six reported that Sawyer, famous for his eye patch, died in Daytona Beach, Florida following a brief illness.
“It’s with a heavy heart that we have to say goodbye to one of the iconic performers of the 1970’s,” a representative told Metro.co.uk. “Ray Sawyer was the face and voice of Dr Hook and I had the pleasure and honour of working with him as his agent/management for the past 27 years.”
The singer — who founded the group with Dennis Locorriere, Billy Francis and George Cummings — was a member of Dr. Hook The Medicine Show from 1969 to 1981.
Some of his biggest hits included ‘Sylvia’s Mother’, ‘A Little Bit More’, ‘Only Sixteen’, ‘Walk Right In’, ‘Sharing the Night Together’, ‘When You’re in Love with a Beautiful Woman’, ‘Better Love Next Time’ and ‘Sexy Eyes’.
Sawyer left the band in 1981 to pursue a solo career, but went on to spend much of his later career touring with a spin-off group named Dr Hook featuring Ray Sawyer. However, health issues forced Sawyer to stop performing live in 2015.
Fans were quick to pay tribute on social media, with one writing: “Heartbroken. What a complete and utter legend! My favourite singer and entertainer, I worship almost everything him and Dr hook did past and present. RIP Ray you incredible incredible human.”
Another added: “Thank you & R.I.P Ray Sawyer. I loved watching you, Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show. Beautiful music & you were so entertaining. I always turn up your songs & place my hand over my heart when I hear your songs.”
