The sporting world is in mourning today following the shock and sudden death of AFL star Colin Sylvia.
Sylvia was just 32 and was famous for playing for Melbourne and Fremantle. Demons legend Garry Lyon broke the tragic news on Monday morning on SEN radio. He confirmed Sylvia had been involved in a car accident in Victoria.
“Colin Sylvia has tragically been killed in a car accident near Mildura, just out of Mildura last night,” Garry Lyon told SEN Breakfast. “Some of the details are a bit sketchy but a two-car collision up there. Colin was taken really early in the draft, I think pick number three, was a really talented footballer at the Melbourne footy club.”
He explained how Sylvia had some off-field problems throughout his career and that he sadly didn’t survive the accident.
“Our condolences and sympathies are extended to Colin Sylvia and his family and friends,” he said.
Devastated teammates have already taken to social media to pay their respects to Sylvia. His Melbourne teammate Brent Moloney shared two photos on Instagram and a heart-breaking message for his mate.
“To my Best mate, I still can’t believe it,” he wrote. “Words can’t describe how I’m feeling!!! We were always side by side no matter where we were. My thoughts go out to his beautiful family, I’m gonna miss you brother x Gone to soon R.I.P Col xx”

St Kilda star Sam Fisher shared his touching message on Twitter.
“Absolutely saddened to hear the news about Colin Sylvia,” he wrote. “Same draft so spend bit and pieces of time with him and always one of the nicest and come say hello! Thoughts are with family and all those close to him! [SIC]”

His former manager also took to Twitter with a message.
“Out of respect to Colin Sylvia’s family I’ll give footy a rest today,” he said. “I managed Col early days he was unique talent sadly now lost. My heart goes out to family & friends. Lost way too soon.”

Victoria Police issued a statement on Sunday afternoon following the accident, explaining there had been a fatal collision in Irymple at the intersection of Nineteenth Street and Benetook Avenue. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
