Clive Palmer’s time as a political leader is no more.
An official announcement has been made stating registration of the Palmer United Party would be cancelled with the Australian Electoral Commission and it would be disbanded.
Palmer also confirmed he was personally retiring from politics.
The announcements were made through a media release, stating the current political conditions were different from 2013 when the party was formed to oppose the carbon and mining taxes.
“Australia has a strong democracy and minor and major political parties have an important role to play,” Mr Palmer said in the statement.
“Palmer United demonstrated that in the 44th Parliament.”
Palmer won the Queensland seat of Fairfax in the Australian House of Representatives and three senators from the party were elected. He did not contest the 2016 federal election.
“I would like to thank the members and thousands of Australians in every state of the Commonwealth who have supported the party and its candidates during the last four years.”
Palmer is currently embroiled in a number of court cases concerning his Queensland Nickel company that went into voluntary administration in January 2016. It went into liquidation in April last year with $300 million in debt and around 800 workers losing jobs.
