CHOICE finds some laundry detergents as bad as water

Some of the most expensive detergents are a waste of money.

Consumer watchdog CHOICE has revealed the best and worst laundry detergents on the market, giving the majority of brands a big fat fail.

Only six products passed their rigorous testing procedures, with some detergents doing only a slightly better than a good old bucket of water.

CHOICE said they tested more than 100 laundry detergents based on the following criteria:

  • Works best in your machine type
  • Works well on 10 difficult-to-remove stains
  • Is good value for money
  • Is best for specific stains
  • Is best for the environment

They said they also tested how environmentally friendly they are by running them through the GreyWater assessment tool to find out their impact on gardens on recycling at wastewater treatment plants.

At the end of their testing period they concluded that only three top loader detergents and three front loader detergents were worth the money.

Top Loaders

  • Trimat Advanced Concentrated Laundry Powder top loader
  • OMO Ultimate powder top loader
  • Trimat Advanced Concentrated Laundry Powder Colour Care top loader

Front Loaders

  • Trimat Advanced Concentrated Laundry Powder front loader
  • OMO Ultimate powder top loader
  • OMO with A Touch of Comfort Inspired Freshness Powder top loader

While the six detergents were the most effective at cleaning garments, they all failed the GreyWater test.

CHOICE shared this photo of the worst performing clearers on their Facebook page.
