There’s no point in relying on your dishwasher if your dishwasher detergent isn’t doing the job. So a new consumer review has revealed which product you should have in your kitchen in order to keep your dishes looking and smelling great.

Consumer watchdog Choice assessed a range of popular and widely available detergents, both in tablet and powder form, and the results might just surprise you. A total of 25 options were put under the spotlight and reviewed by the customer advocacy group, with just 10 of those being labelled as ‘recommended’ choices for consumers.

The products were assessed on a range of factors including how well they removed egg yolk, rice starch, red wine and coffee stains. And the best-performing detergent, landing an overall score of 77 out of 100, was Earth Choice Dish Tablets which retails at $16.20 for a 42-pack.

Although it’s not the cheapest detergent on the market, with an egg yolk removal score of 89 per cent, a rice starch removal score or 69 per cent and an average per-wash cost of just 39 cents, it’s easy to see why the product came out on top and is recommended by Choice. Additionally, it’s free from harsh chemicals and is accredited as cruelty free by CCF (Choose Cruelty Free).

“We don’t usually advocate that you have to spend more to get a product that works, but it seems that’s the case when it comes to what you put in your dishwasher to get your dishes sparkling clean,” the customer advocacy group said in a statement.

“Dishwasher tablets make up over two-thirds of dishwasher detergent sales. And although they cost more per wash, our tests show they generally perform better than cheaper powders and gels.”

Meanwhile, Woolworths Shine 10 in 1 Dishwashing Tablets ($4.50) and Coles Ultra Plus+ Advanced Clean Lemon Fresh Tablets ($6) tied in second place and were both awarded overall scores of 73 per cent. Both products did well in terms of removing egg yolk and rice starch, but they didn’t perform as well when it came to coffee or red wine stains, with the Coles tablets scoring 53 per cent for both and the Woolworths tablets scoring 46 per cent for red wine and 53 per cent for coffee stains.

In joint third were Aldi Logix Complete 10 In 1 Automatic Dishwasher Tablets ($4.29), Fairy Platinum All In One Dishwasher Capsules Lemon ($7.00) and Finish Powerball Quantum Ultimate Lemon Sparkle ($17), at 72 per cent. While fifth place was secured by Aldi Logix Platinum 18 In 1 Automatic Dishwasher Tablets (47.69), Coles Ultra Complete Clean Lemon Fresh Tablets ($5), Finish Powerball Quantum Tabs Lemon Sparkle ($14) and Finish Powerball Quantum Tabs Original ($14), landing an overall score of 70 per cent.

The lowest score overall was given to Woolworths Shine Dishwasher Powder Concentrate ($4.00), which was also one of the cheapest tested, landing an overall disappointing score of just 38 per cent. It scored just 23 per cent on egg yolk removal and 13 per cent when it came to removing rice starch off dishes.

Surprisingly, some popular household brands ranked last in the review, including Finish Concentrated Powder Classic Lemon Sparkle, which cost $10.99 but only rated 53 per cent overall, and Coles Ultra 2 X Concentrate Powder Lemon Fresh, which cost $4 but only rated 42 per cent overall.

Meanwhile, it comes after a recent review by Choice found Omo with A Touch of Comfort Inspired Freshness, which retails at $19.99 for a 2kg box, was the best-performing product when it came to laundry detergent, landing an overall score of 84 out of 100. The product was awarded a general detergency score – how well it removes oil, dirt and stains from clothing – of 85 per cent, a perspiration score of 83 per cent and an average per-wash cost of just 51 cents.

However, it did fall short when it came to being named a Best Buy, which is a label bestowed upon products which are great value for money, but are not quite good enough to be recommended. Along with Omo, Dynamo, Trimat, Cold Power, Earth Choice and Fab also received high praise in the reviews, while Woolworths Essentials laundry liquid and Surf Tropical Tiger Lily received some of the worst scores.
