The Supremes singer Barbara Martin has passed away at the age of 76, with news of her death shared via the band’s social media page on Friday.

The legendary musician, who was one of the original members of the all female singing group, was confirmed dead by one of her bandmates in a post on Facebook. Mary Wilson took to social media to share the tragic news writing: “‪Barbara Martin passed”.

The news of her passing was also shared on the group’s Facebook page with a short but sweet message for the talented performer.

“Our hearts go out to Barbara’s family and friends. Once a Supreme, always a Supreme,” the post read.

Tributes for the star have since begun to pour in, with fans leaving loving messages for Barbara and her family.

“Thank you Barbara Martin Richardson for enriching our lives,” one person wrote on Twitter. “Though your time as an original Supreme was brief, it left a mark on all of us who love the group and the music. We remember you Barbara, always.”

“Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Barbara Martin,” another said.

Barbara first joined the band in 1960, when she replaced Betty McGlown. At that time the group were still known as The Primettes. The talented singer only stayed with the band for two years, leaving in 1962 shortly after they released their first single.

Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson continued on as a trio and became a huge success with songs including ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ and ‘You Keep Me Hanging On’ reaching global audiences. Years later the band disbanded in 1977.
