The family of legendary actor Sean Connery has revealed they will scatter his ashes at the famed St Andrews golf course in Scotland.
The James Bond star, who died in his sleep aged 90 in October 2020, was a dedicated golf player and a member of the exclusive Royal & Ancient Golf Club that calls St Andrews home. Sean’s son, Jason Connery, said they couldn’t think of a more fitting place to lay him to rest.
“I have memories of St Andrews always being sunny. It wasn’t, but we had special times there,” he told Scotland’s STV News on Thursday.
Jason, who is also an actor, said the family had hoped to spread the 007 legend’s ashes on his birthday on August 25, but would likely have to delay because of coronavirus restrictions.
Sean battled dementia in his final years and had lost the ability to communicate, however, his family knew he wanted his final resting place to be in his beloved home country. His wife, Micheline Roquebrune, told The Mail on Sunday the disease “took its toll on him” but he “got his final wish to slip away without any fuss”.
There was an outpouring of love for the actor following his death, and it resulted in his family learning many wonderful stories about him they’d never heard before. Jason said he’d been inundated with tales about his father from old school friends and acquaintances and that it was touching to know how big of an impact he’d had on so many people.
“My father was my dad, but to many people he was this big superstar,” he told STV News. “So many people have stories of things he did that I never knew about – and those were really moving to me.
While Sean was best known as the original British spy 007, who he played from 1962 to 1971, he tackled many acclaimed roles throughout his career and won an Oscar, two Baftas and three Golden Globes. In 2000 he was knighted by the Queen.
