American actress Betty Bobbitt, who played Judy Bryant in the iconic Australian television series Prisoner and starred in cult classic Crocodile Dundee II, has died at age 81 after suffering from a stroke.

Her son Chris confirmed the sad news in a social media post on Monday, revealing she passed away “peacefully” with “no pain” that morning.

“Sadly mum passed away this morning at 10.20am after five nights in hospital,” he wrote. “She was peaceful and in no pain. Thank you for your support and apologies if I can’t respond to everyone but I will try. I will post more later. Chris.”

A day earlier, Chris revealed his mother had suffered a massive stroke on Wednesday night and was in palliative care in hospital, telling fans “she’s not expected to recover”.

“We are hugely devastated and struggling to come to terms with such a sudden event,” he wrote on November 29. “My mum has been a legend, an inspiration, a mentor and icon for so many. She is comfortable and not in any pain that we can tell, but the prognosis is not good.

“She is not expected to recover. I am sorry to break this news to you all. We are so sad. I will keep you all in the loop and let you know what is happening. I will be taking care of her social media from now but I apologise if I can’t respond to everyone, but I will try. Thank you all for being such amazing fans.”

Many have since paid their respects, with one writing: “I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you find some peace in knowing that your mother will live on in our hearts through her amazing life and work.”

Another added: “So, so sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful woman and a brilliant actress. One of my most loved characters on Prisoner. Rest In Peace Betty Bobbitt.”

While a third wrote: “Ohh no, so sorry to hear, your mum was certainly a great actor (one of my faves from Prisoner) and from what I’ve heard from many others she was also a beautiful person in general. My thoughts and condolences to you and your family.”
